Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau
Bridgehead EXPO Tourism Belt

AsiaWorld-Expo (AWE) in collaboration with Zhuhai International Convention & Exhibition Center (ZHCEC), Hong Kong Regal Hotel and Zhuhai Chimelong Henqing Bay Hotel recently announced the formation of a new “Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridgehead EXPO Tourism Belt” alliance, which was formalised with a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing ceremony held on 5 July 2018. All alliance members are committed to strengthening the joint promotion of Hong Kong and Zhuhai’s MICE industries, especially in terms of multi-venue business models such as “One Fair, Two Cross-Boundary Venues” and “One Journey, Multiple Destinations”. The formation of this strategic alliance also demonstrates the readiness of all partners to embrace the many new opportunities brought about by the continued development of the Greater Bay Area.

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) is expected to open in the fourth quarter of 2018, after which it will take just half an hour to travel between Hong Kong and Zhuhai. Located adjacent to the bridge’s entry point, AWE is the natural gateway to the entire Pearl River Delta region. Looking ahead, the number of Mainland delegates and tourists coming for events at AWE is expected to increase significantly, creating many more business contacts and opportunities.

Another highlight prior to the MOU event was a private visit to the HZMB site for alliance members and their guests. Thanks to the generous support of the Zhuhai Convention & Expo. Bureau and HZMB Authority, AWE together with representatives from Hong Kong and Zhuhai business and media received a detailed introduction to the bridge’s remarkable structural design and engineering complexity.

Belt and Road
International Food Expo (HK)

27-29 June 2018

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) provides a visionary blueprint for the global economy in the 21st century. Its breathtaking scope and scale covers over 63% of the world’s population in more than 68 countries and territories, including the tremendous potential of emerging economies in ASEAN, the Middle East, and Central and Eastern Europe.

Hong Kong’s First “Belt and Road International Food Expo” (BRIFE) aimed to maximise these opportunities by providing a one-stop business matchmaking and investment cooperation platform for the international agriculture and food industries. AWE was honoured to welcome Dr. Bernard Chan Pak-li, Under Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, as guest of honour at the opening ceremony.

The three-day exhibition brought together some 300 exhibitors from over 35 countries and regions, as well as government ministers and consuls from five countries. In addition to the exhibition, the event also featured the first Belt & Road Agrifood & Trade Summit (ATS), Hot Chef Challenge, and “BRIFE 2018 Awards”.

The Hot Chef Challenge was a prime example of the EXPOtainment concept that AWE does so well: this thrilling culinary competition invited over 80 elite chefs from around the world to showcase their cooking prowess. Thanks to its wealth of experience in managing banquets of more than 360 tables, AWE’s F&B team won the gold prize in the first round of the competition!

Travel Tips and Cultural Delights this September

Mid-Autumn Festival
24 September 2018

The Mid-Autumn Festival has been celebrated every year since the early Tang dynasty (618–907 A.D.) to express gratitude for a bumper harvest as well as offering families the opportunity to gather with distant relatives. For many people in Chinese community, it’s still considered one of the most important festivals of the year.

Overseas travellers visiting Hong Kong in September shouldn’t miss the many cultural events associated with this festival, including the Fire Dragon Dance at Tai Hang village, which is now enshrined as part of China’s official intangible cultural heritage. Across Hong Kong, you’ll also find an array of lantern exhibitions and carnivals, as well as traditional stage shows, palm readings, game stalls, lantern riddle quizzes and much more.

Another iconic festive tradition is to eat mooncakes, which are traditionally made with whole egg yolks embedded in lotus seed paste. Naturally, however, this is Hong Kong and nothing is spared a modern makeover! Today, you can easily find a broad selection of creative and tempting mooncake fillings. Join the fun and take your taste buds on an irresistible tour!

AWE – At the Heart of a Booming New Lifestyle Zone

To capitalise on the emerging bridgehead economy created by the three high-profile new infrastructure projects on Lantau—namely the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Link, and the airport’s new three-runway system—the Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA) has announced its exciting new blueprint for SKYCITY, which aims to capture broad opportunities in tourism and business, while also providing a dynamic lifestyle and family entertainment hub.

Located adjacent to AWE, SKYCITY will be a major new integrated development comprising world-class retail, dining, hotels, entertainment facilities and offices. Serving both local and overseas visitors, SKYCITY is poised to become a major new landmark in Hong Kong.

On 2 May 2018, AA announced that Roxy Limited, a subsidiary wholly-owned by New World Development Company Limited, has been awarded the right to develop and manage this massive new commercial development. Scheduled to be opened in phases from 2023 to 2027, the complete SKYCITY will provide a maximum gross floor area of some 350,000 square metres, equivalent to five IFC mall in Hong Kong.

The first phase of SKYCITY will include a new hotel with 1,000 rooms scheduled to open in 2020/21, developed and managed by the Regal Hotels Group. Easily accessible by public transport, SKYCITY will also feature a dedicated Transport Terminal and at least 2,800 car parking spaces, maximising the many opportunities created by the Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Link and Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.

Ultimately, SKYCITY will be the largest retail complex in Hong Kong. Located just minutes away from AWE and connected with a covered footbridge, MICE delegates will be able to enjoy an even more action-packed programme that integrates a world-class exhibition and conference experience with new accommodation options, world-class shopping, diverse dining, and experience-based entertainment.

Every Decision Counts

In keeping with its commitment to the highest environmental standards, AWE and its retail partners have implemented a no-straw policy at all F&B outlets. For customers’ convenience, paper straws are available upon request. We’ve also launched an instant HK$3 cash discount for all customers with a Bring-Your-Own-Cup. This initiative is further complemented by the sale of reusable cups and water bottles in the venue’s on-site vending machines.

Customers ordering take-away food will soon find that all disposable plastic cutlery and meal boxes have been replaced with environmentally-friendly and bio-degradable materials. Likewise, our “Stack-up Cup” promotion offers a cash rebate to encourage bar patrons to refill their beers and drinks in the same cup.

To further maximise the environmental credentials of events at AWE, we have increased the number and ratio of 4-in-1 recycling bins at large-scale exhibitions, and now have prominent signage to help all delegates and visitors make the most of these facilities. In collaboration with event organisers, we’re working hard to disseminate the news to exhibitors beforehand, and reinforcing the message on-site with student volunteers.

In keeping with the global trend for plastic reduction, all plastic bags at AWE including take-away items at F&B outlets, are now charged at cost, incentivising people to re-think their use of plastic and help protect the planet.
