AWE Takes the Spotlight with
New MICE Accolades

AsiaWorld-Expo (AWE) won the Outstanding Venue Award on its first attempt at the 2018 AFECA Asian Awards held by the Asian Federation of Exhibition and Convention Associations (AFECA). The award was evaluated by industry leaders together with figureheads from the region’s leading exhibition and convention associations, and was judged according to multiple sets of criteria. In particular, the judges gave heavy weighting to the nominees’ use of innovative technology to deliver an excellent exhibitor and visitor experience. Beating stiff competition from world-class venues across Asia, this high-profile industry award recognises AWE’s efforts in applying smart technology and reaffirms the venue’s leading position in the region.

At the same time, AWE garnered the Best Convention and Exhibition Centre Award for the eighth consecutive year at the CEI Readers’ Choice Awards. Voted by readers of CEI magazine, a prestigious, industry-leading MICE publication, the award is a testament to AWE’s long standing commitment to quality.

From the outset, AWE has always been committed to enhancing its services and facilities to provide an unparalleled experience to both organisers and visitors. In the past decade, the venue has received numerous accolades and widespread recognition. Both the AFECA Outstanding Venue Award and the latest CEI Award are powerful confirmation of AWE’s ongoing success, and its rich potential for future growth.

2018 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA)
14 December 2018

Known as Asia's biggest and most influential music festival, MAMA recently returned to AWE for the sixth consecutive year. 2018 MAMA was again styled as "MAMA WEEK" – a one-week tour that began in Korea, followed by Japan, and celebrated its grand finale at AWE.

This year, over 100 world-famous artists, producers, and teams across Asia joined 2018 MAMA at AWE, including artists from America, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and elsewhere, solidifying MAMA's status as a flagship global music festival. The programme was simultaneously broadcast across four continents, namely Asia, Europe, North America and Oceania.

Featuring Hong Kong's largest indoor arena with a magnificent column-free design and extra-high 19-metre ceiling, AWE is the natural choice for MAMA's innovative stage setups, complex productions and mega-scale performances. At this year's event, an array of exhibitions was also held under the same roof, including food, cosmetics and music-related products, turning AWE into a truly K-pop cultural carnival.

These two leading B2B trade shows celebrated innovation, creativity and design in the beauty industry.

Collectively, the two shows brought together over 3,000 exhibitors in a combined exhibition area of 113,800 sqm, and welcomed more than 87,000 professional visitors from all over the globe. These remarkable numbers are yet further proof of the continued success of the "One Fair, Two Venues" model.

Hong Kong Travel Tips: From AWE to WOW
Dragon and Lion Dance
Extravaganza 2019

1 January 2019

On 1st January every year, Hong Kong puts on a massive show featuring hundreds of colourful dragons, lions, happy Buddhas, acrobats and celestial guardians dancing and parading through the streets of the city.

Dragon and lion dances are traditional performances in Chinese culture. Symbolising good luck, they are believed to bring power, dignity, fertility, wisdom and great fortune, which is why both dragon and lion dances are performed during major festive celebrations such as Chinese New Year.

For New Year's Day 2019, this festival returns as the third International World Dragon and Lion Dance Extravaganza. Starting early in the morning and lasting all day, troupes of lion and dragon dancers will perform in the Piazza of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre and in tourist hotspots all over Kowloon. Overseas travellers celebrating New Year in Hong Kong mustn’t miss this thrilling cultural event!

HZMB Creates Exciting New Synergies for AWE

The world’s longest bridge-cum-tunnel sea crossing, the 55-km Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB), was newly opened on 24 October 2018. Operating 24 hours a day, the HZMB puts significant cities in the Greater Bay Area within a one-hour radius of each other. It now takes only 40 minutes to travel between Hong Kong and Zhuhai or Macao.

Since its opening, the bridge has recorded significant traffic: up to 100,000 people use it on weekends, with up to 3,500 people per hour at peak times.

Facilitating hassle-free cross-boundary travel, the bridge is a powerful new component of AWE’s “Twin Events, Two Cross-Boundary Venues” and “One Journey, Multiple Destinations” event models. Located at the entry point to the bridge, AWE now enjoys seamless integration with a vast MICE catchment area, all reachable within a short travel time. The enhanced transportation network connecting AWE and the bridgehead now offers a direct and convenient route for everyone coming from the western Pearl River Delta to attend and participate in shows at AWE.

Working Hand in Hand for a Greener Future

During the recent Eco Expo Asia 2018 event, AWE’s cleaning partner, Baguio, showcased an innovative new eco-booth design using both green and reusable materials in its decorations, and upcycling waste materials in its set-up. For instance, glass and disposable plastic bottles were used as backdrop décor, all of which were sent for recycling at the end of the event. The booth’s tranquil area of greenery featured soil made from animal waste, and comprised a selection of bamboo and small plants that staff were able to take back to their workplaces at the event’s conclusion. The booth didn’t even require the purchase of any new furniture, as all tables and chairs were made of paper and biodegradable materials, and can be used again at other events. The use of electronic promotional materials likewise minimised paper wastage.

Education is essential to promoting green messages, which is why AWE partnered with the event organiser and the Business Environment Council to arrange for a group of student ambassadors to proactively approach exhibitors and offer instant recycling solutions—an easy way to “Go Green”!

To encourage green choices in everyday life, AWE's vending machines now stop selling drinks in plastic bottles. To further increase awareness of green issues during the public day of the recent Eco Expo event, visitors who purchased a reusable bottle at AWE were rewarded with a complimentary drink.
